It’s the day after our pre season game v Fuenlabrada…. what an interesting game to be a part of. Both teams pick up full court, playing really aggressive defence, turning dribblers, traps from the blind side…both teams liked to fast break too…very quick, D’antoni style…the difference being we play 1v1 with the dribble to the extreme, attacking everyone off the dribble…always…and Fuenla hardly dribbled the ball….maybe once per offence…unreal!
We both struggled defensively, to cope with each others playing styles. We did a great job of picking off passes, but any missed shot from a half court situation…they were gone!!!
They used 2 great cuts to get up court and get easy bucket…
When first cut was made, ball was only in the receivers hands for a second…the off ball players are reading passes and their defenders positioning, to make an effective cut while the ball is in mid air. Catching defenders with front and back cuts. They would look for spots on the floor to receive and by the time our defenders were close to recovering, the ball was gone! Lots of touch passes and no look passes…great foot work when receiving passes and composure/ body control to pivot and make the next pass.
I believe both teams need a bit of each other…good balance of all skills…not afraid to attack players 1v1…but have the ability to pass out of pressure.
It was easy to see what both teams philosophies were as they were so extreme…last year, the team I am working with now, only worked on shooting, 1v1 and fast breaks…thats it!! Last year was preparation for this year, so we will be putting some team concepts in place…as mentioned in the last post.
To hear the coaches reinforce the philosophy all game, score or miss and go nuts when players are doing their own thing score or miss is great to see. This is the highest level in Spain, the teams in our division all have a great chance of going to the Madrid Championship and also Spanish Championship and still it’s development first…win at all costs is not an option!
