We had that much needed beat down!
We played Cadete ‘C’ last week…2 years ago I worked with Cadete ‘C’, it is full of 1st and 2nd years who have great potential or are not quite right for the ‘A’ or ‘B’ team…( ‘A’ Teams are the best 2nd years…’B’ Teams are the best 1st years, of that age group).
Anyway, the game, great to see, was probably more like how our games are going to be, bigger more physical…(more on that in a sec)…this was great preparation, the fast breaks were very fast and tested us…the physical battles looked painful…lots of blow by’s…the whole game was as real as its going to be. When we switched off we were punished, when we didn’t play tough it cost us…so if anything positive happened, we had to work for it. We played great, also the players had great attitudes.
I was involved in a conversation with our Physical Trainer and our Head Coach…the physical trainer mentioned that the guys are very slim…but the coach prefers this…as we can’t use physical size and strength to compete in games, so we must be smarter both technically and tactically. Once they are older and mature and begin weight training, they will dominate…! Suppose its like the “throw it at the tall kid” tactic we have all seen, then everyone catches up and he is the height of a guard with no skill…but vice versa. Ha Ha…more or less!
So far we have played 3 games, 2 games v older teams from our club, plus Fuenlabrada who we will play this season. What I have love about these games is the demand to take steps in the right direction…massive club, big reputation, dead certs to be there at the business end of the season and there is no demand to succeed or execute.
Coach puts them on the Iceberg and hopes they will dip their toes, once they have, we encourage them to dive in!
For example, one of our bigs, I have been doing Specific Training with him and another for 6 sessions. He is athletic…6 foot 5 more or less and prefers to shoot and go 1v1 from the perimeter. Fine, coach loves this. Coach is looking to broaden this players horizons so he has me working on inside skills too.
So in games and training, right now, we ask him to look for contact under the basket and catch the ball…thats it!!! We then heap with praise when he does. He is starting to keep the contact and relax in there, so it’s going well…The moves we work on help him to gain confidence inside…then he will have an inside game to go with his outside game. This will probably take all season, but what a prospect he will be…
Its hard to describe, its a professional, performance atmosphere in sessions and games, but when things go wrong its fine, lets talk about it, “don’t worry” (in Spanish) is heard a lot in our sessions!
Ok, we have our first game this weekend, will be in touch soon!
