Hi, recently I have been in contact with successful UK Coach James Vear ( @CoachVear )….Assistant Basketball Coach Dalhousie University, Canada….and also Brian McCormick of the famous basketball website http://thecrossovermovement.wordpress.com/ and author of Cross Over: The New Model of Youth Basketball Development…both had good ideas for posts…so I will try to answer.
Compared with the UK, volume of players is unreal here in Spain…my club alone has 53 teams…!!! We have 12 players per team… we have 2 players train with us from the Estu ‘C’ team as they were cut from us at the start of the season…one has masses of potential, so he is a ‘future player’ and needs to stay in the club and get minutes…and the other is an amazing talent but lazy…so he was given the option of leaving the club or playing for the ‘C’ team…he loves the club so opted to stay and is knocking in 45points a game!!!
53 teams means a lot of coaches…some, but not many have 2 teams…a lot of teams on the girls side have the assistant coach of the ‘A’ team working as the head coach on the ‘B’ team…this means it’s a 2 year project when the B team becomes the A…with the boys, seems like they have coaches who chop and change each year…either way…still very successful.
Access to knowledge….anyone is welcome, anyone can watch the youth teams train, even rival coaches….I once watched the professional mens team train, sitting next to a Real Madrid Scout, he was asking me who I liked and who didn’t as I watched them everyday. Great to have the access to quality coaching everyday.
Quality coaches are a must…simple reason is that players can be sold…my club thrives on developing players… they can be sold when the are older…not what they want but when Real Madrid come knocking with big money…it’s hard to turn down. So not just any old Joe Bloggs can be a coach here…!
Players get tapped up by clubs all the time, even at U10s they are looking for potential to bring to the club…its big business. So big moves in the leagues every Summer. However as I said before, teams can only have so many…my club once had 3 point guards, all involved in the Spanish Selection…they chose their 2 and let the other go…as his future depended on him playing minutes that he wouldn’t get at the club. Imagine doing a dip between 3 International players…
Teams are halved too…players for now and players for the future…players for ‘now’ have it all, score all the points and are more mature for their age…they will be out the club in a year or 2 as they are a not going to grow/develop anymore…the other half is the future…they get their minutes and development…The bulk of the points on our team come from the ‘now’ players and the ones who make the most mistakes are the ‘future’ players…these are the guys who ‘have something special’ these are the guys who are will have futures in Basketball. The kid with the shooters touch or…the perfect frame…bambi on ice…the kid with the court vision…the creative player…the kid with long arms…etc
I have heard the Spanish Selection is the same…a team for winning tournaments but bubbling under the surface are the future players…
The club tries to…create shooters…defend hard and fastbreak, like any other club….how you do this as a coach is up to you…the club has a technical co-ordinator who watches sessions/games and advises the coaches to do more or less of something…or say that this player needs 30mins a game…that player must have 1 to 1 sessions with a separate coach etc.
All A+B teams train 3 times a week except Junior A+B…they train 4 times…sessions are 90mins….before or after each session players have a physical session of Strength and Conditioning….this may sound a lot…but we static shoot a lot in our week…so its not all out all day everyday. Fully qualified S+C coaches work with the players 3/4 times a week…they work with the future in mind using age specific workouts.
Players have fully qualified physiotherapists to help with injuries…A+B teams have a Physio assigned to them and they are at every game.
The players have at least 22 games a season…not including Madrid or Spanish Selections…orrrr final 8s…I’d hazard a guess at on average 35 a season…for some…
