I had a very interesting conversation this week…
A Coach at the club from Cataluña, a place with a different coaching mentality. Calm, quiet coaches with a preference for details and players searching their way. Head Coach of CADETE “B” FEM (born in 98) here at Club Estudiantes…first year of the Cadet age group, a few of the girls play for the Spanish Selection… a lot of them play for Madrid. He has a lot of very talented players to work with.
He told me how he is “half Basketball Coach, half Philosopher…”
To see one of his sessions is an unbelievable experience, all his huddles are full of the girls giggling and he is so calm… and patient. He quotes Shakespeare, he talks about life lessons, gets his players to think about their actions on and off the court. Not so much “Don’t talk to Strangers…” more…”To be or not to be…” expanding players minds…opening the doors for the players…hoping they walk through.
A coach here recommended I watch a inspirational video with him, the video was by Benjamin Zander…a Classical Conductor, who gives speeches… within it was this quote…
“I will never say anything that couldn’t stand as the last thing I ever say”
This is the message I get in all of the Time Outs, huddles and sessions…. when you talk with him its exactly the same.
He told me he prefers his players to enjoy his teaching…to learn…to get a feel for all that he is teaching…he said that nothing he does right now will take hold for a few years and that he is just part of the process. Don’t bring stress to the basketball court.
To quote Zander once more…
…like the bird who flies over the field and doesn’t care about the fences underneath…
Enjoy the process…
I also heard that he coached mini basketball last year and during the games he just chatted to the players on the bench and gave tips and tricks during quarters…its a game…let them play.
Well…more to come, very soon…less depth, more shooty/ passy…
