“You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist”
Over the next few Bloggs I will be discussing some of the tactical concepts and coaching styles I have seen within the club. The clubs technical director decides the style and the coaches take the players from point A to B. So my club wants full court/ aggressive defence….great shooters, uptempo-creative players and 1v1 specialists.
So from the coach who does 40 mins 1v0 to the coach who only plays 3v3…we have many different coaching styles and ideas. These ideas follow a plan of development which coaches must follow, this puts development 1st and winning 2nd. 5 out until 13, then 4 out 1 in can be introduced, off ball screens at 14 then on ball screens at 15…more or less.
The coach I am going to talk about coaches girls of 14.
His main principles are:
- Pure 1v1, the ability to create for yourself
- Extra passes…the touch passes, no looks, just about to shoot….and at the last second….pass…!
- Attack the open space you create with the pass, if there is no space, no dribbling.
- Move the defence from left to right
He said to me, that he is trying to create superstars, all the greats have the ball towards the end of the game, time running out…this is the point when they create, so the development of his players to create their own shot takes up a large portion of his sessions.
Tactically, he is working on the following concepts:
FastBreak up the middle, this player can go 1v1 or pass to either corner, then they can go 1v1…
Outlet to the sideline/ halfway line and 1v1 from there…
Outlet to the sideline/ halfway line, the player in the same position on the opposite side, flash cuts to the ballside low post. The ball is passed into the post, from here the players can cut off the post, relocate etc etc….or go 1v1 in the post!
This is what his team are trying to do if a “D’antoni” is not on the cards, but its so free and relaxed…no pressure, just something to try. Within all of this fit the principles mentioned at the beginning…we then get on to the half court ideas…
To be continued….
